Hello There! Hearing the word “stipend” causes both excitement and curiosity at the same time for every one of us! Certainly! If you are preparing for postgraduation, the thought of stipend-providing colleges must have at least once crossed your mind. After all, getting a stipend during post-graduation can resolve so many issues. It significantly impacts the MDS journey, even before you start it!
Unlike the regular stipend facility in government dental colleges, it ceases to exist in the maximum number of private dental colleges. Sadly, it’s a painful reality unless you get an MDS admission to a private dental college that also offers a stipend facility. How about this combination? The tedious MDS journey will slightly feel less levied and pleasant for you! Isn’t it?
I understand that even getting a minimal allowance from the dental institute you are studying at can be great! Some help is better than no help, isn’t it? So, now, let’s check out where you can reap the stipend benefit!

MDS Stipend In Private Dental Colleges
The stipend for MDS programs in private dental colleges can vary widely based on certain college factors, such as the college administration, affiliations, and regulations.
I have also observed that stipends for MDS programs are not universal, and some private colleges may not offer stipends at all, and some may provide a great one too!
My research and experience tell me that most dental colleges run by deemed universities practice a stipend facility for PG dental students. So, here is the list of DCI-recognized colleges and the stipend they are currently providing to their MDS students!

Why do MDS Students need a Stipend?
To understand that, let’s have an overview of the MDS curriculum design. There is a standard guideline implemented by the Dental Council of India that is the same for every MDS student studying in any dental college across India.
You are aware that the MDS is a three-year-long course, and at a private college, this course will cost you a tuition fee. Apart from the tuition fee, the MDS curriculum includes costs for research studies (case studies, dissertations), participation in conferences, conventions, and CDE programs etc. Also, reference books and journal subscriptions are endless purchases during the course duration.
To accomplish these, at least an additional expenditure of Rs.1,00,000/- to Rs.2,00,000/- can be expected during the MDS course. Here, the stipend can make a difference by providing economic assistance to students. And also, it will be so nice if you have to depend a little less on your parents too!
So, there is a significant impact of the stipend on the MDS journey. But what if you don’t get one? I have also added some facts and solutions to this question; you can read them below!
No Stipend- No Worries!
I have told a tale about the stipend facility, but we can’t ignore the fact that there are limitations to this benefit. Sadly, since only 9% of private colleges offer stipends, getting one of them can also be highly competitive. So, now what?
Don’t get disheartened because there are ways, if you will, to use them to manage your expenses during MDS as well!
I have gathered a few project-like ideas from some students who have already completed or are pursuing MDS. So, here are some suggestions which they have already benefited from. Maybe these can flow some cash into your pockets, too!
- Joining a part-time clinic.
- Dental Consultation (Specialty).
- Volunteering in research.
- Academic Writing for Publications.
- Dental Blogging.
- Dental Tutor for UG students.
- Content Writing.
- Dental Content Creation.
Stipend or College? The Conclusion
Certainly! If you get these together, it will be more favorable for you. But the reality is that only a handful of doctors are fortunate enough to get this combination across India. So, it’s a tough shot!
Although the stipend facility is not available in most private dental colleges, that doesn’t justify that these colleges are not worth studying! In fact, in some good colleges, you can still get a fee advantage if not the stipend!
Apart from that, not all stipend-providing colleges need to be the best! The stipend facility doesn’t dictate or control the quality of a dental college.
In a few institutes, good stipends are allowed, but in exchange for a huge annual tuition fee! Of course, this doesn’t apply to all colleges, but it is what I have commonly observed when it comes to stipend trends in private colleges.
One well-known, reputed dental college in India, where the tuition fee is Rs.9,61,000/- per year for MDS, is also giving a stipend of Rs.60,000/- annually, which is commendable but less common. And getting there is also competitive!
So, you must evaluate the college quality, especially in terms of the department or specialty, when you plan for your MDS admission before considering the stipend.
From my experience, I can assure you that If you educate yourself in a good dental college and master your specialty well, eventually you will get a return on the investment you make in your MDS. So don’t worry!
I hope this information proves to be helpful for you to learn about the various allowances and other doubts regarding the MDS stipend in India!
